The College of Engineering has always been a fundamental part of Ajou University and has spearheaded the advancement of Ajou University. Despite a mere 40 years of history, the College of Engineering has become one of the top-notch programs in Korea in terms of educational quality and competitiveness against other Korean Universities, some of which were established more than a hundred years ago. Moreover, Ajou University was ranked 5th among the ’Natural Sciences and Engineering’-Centered Universities in Korea, according to Joongang Daily’s university evaluation report in 2010. The past forty years has been a period for the college of Engineering at Ajou University to transform itself into a top-class engineering college in Korea, and the forthcoming years will be spent becoming one of the top engineering colleges in the world.

Introduction to Departments

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering (the integration of contemporary technologies) is a discipline that has developed dramatically and is designed to create technical manpower, able to predict and prepare for future technology. Its key areas include 'Dynamics' (exploring the principle of the transmission of both power and energy), 'Design Technique' (making new design concepts to meet social demand and lead to future changes)', and 'Manufacturing Technique (the combination of CAD/CAM and Mechatronics)'.

Graduates who majored in mechanical engineering are working in a variety of industrial fields ranging from heavy industries such as automobile, aviation, robot, machine tool, energy conversion and power plants to electronics and electrical machinery, mechatronics as a combined technology of electrical engineering and mechanical engineering, heating and cooling and building facilities, corporation-affiliated research institutes, national and public research institutes, and academic institutions. A growing number of graduates have established technically innovative companies based on the technology they invented themselves.

Department of Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineering realizes a high value-added information and knowledge-based engineering discipline. Its creativity and innovation maximizes industrial competitiveness in advanced knowledge-based industrial society in the 21st century. The role of industrial engineering is to create, analyze, apply, and integrate knowledge for the design, improvement and implementation of complex systems that include humans, information, equipment and other resources. To be one of Korea's top-three-ranked and the world's top-fifty-ranked departments, we introduce innovative educational curricula and foster environments for teamwork, diversity, and good citizenship. To keep a strong, balanced research program, we create partnerships with industry, government, and alumni with professional and ethical responsibility.

Department of Chemical Engineering

Our mission is to produce scholars and chemical engineers equipped with creative adaptability in the industrial world. It will provide a pivotal role in the development of chemical engineering by educating students with the fundamentals to carry out creative activities. In addition, our curriculum provides various courses which cultivate the students’ personality so that they can actively respond to the ever-changing society and technologies. Chemical Engineering graduates either continue their education in graduate school or pursue a career in various industries. Those who jump into their careers begin in a variety of areas including oil refinery, petrochemical engineering, electro-chemical engineering, development of energy sources, and materials science. For those who continue their studies in graduate school to earn either a master’s or a doctoral degree, they have wide opportunities to improve their research in an academic circle or public and corporate research institutes.

Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Materials Science and Engineering(MSE) is a discipline that develops and utilizes materials with a variety of properties required by almost all industrial fields including machinery, electricity, electronics, construction, and energy. Leading to an industrial evolution by providing new materials and processing technologies, MSE is in high demand for research and development. MSE graduates find a wide range of career opportunities to be an R&D or field engineer in the materials production sector as well as other sectors such as 'electronics', 'automotive and machineries', and 'power and energy'.

Department of Applied Chemistry & Biological Engineering

Applied Chemistry & Biological Engineering, a convergence program born in 2008 by integrating applied chemistry and bioscience majors, has prepared itself to cope with future industries and established itself as a unique division that can carry out education and research for the application, convergence, and industrialization of chemistry and bioscience. The division offers various courses on basic concepts and engineering knowledge in chemistry and bioscience for lower-year students, and more intensive courses related to chemistry and bio engineering, such as medicine, bio energy, medicinal materials, nano, fermentation, and nanobio for upper-year students, aiming to foster industrial engineers with extensive professional engineering knowledge. After graduation, students are active in a wide variety of sectors in the biological and chemical industries, such as electronics, materials, pharmacy, medicine, food, cosmetics, environment, and energy.

Department of Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineering is a discipline that studies various solutions for environmental pollution caused inevitably by industrialization and urbanization. The environmental engineering program aims to cultivate competent experts in environmental fields, who can identify and solve environmental problems. Environmental Engineering majors have the opportunity to take the qualifying exam for the grade-1 engineer in water quality, atmosphere, air, soil, and wastes fields. Graduates of the Environmental Engineering department work for environmental agencies including central and local governments, industry, engineering consulting firms, and other environment management areas.

Department of Civil Systems Engineering

Civil Systems Engineering (CSE) is a category dealing with the construction of a more pleasant and convenient human environment. It is a discipline that aims for the efficient use and management of natural resources. Upon graduation, most CSE students tend to work in major construction or engineering companies. As most civil engineering works are national projects, CSE graduates are likely to join national or public institutions such as governmental offices, Korea Expressway Corporation, and Korea Land and Housing Corporation. Some of them may enter graduate school for more in-depth education or go to various research institutes.

Department of Transportation Systems Engineering

Transportation Systems Engineering is a discipline that scientifically and technologically studies the planning, design, operation, and management of all transportation facilities for safe, convenient, and efficient transport of humans and goods, such as roads, railroads, harbors, and airports . The Transportation Systems engineer studies to gain a wide range of knowledge in transportation engineering in general and learn advanced theories to cultivate the capacity to formulate rational solutions for urban, local, and international transportation problems. Upon graduation, students are likely to join transportation-related national research institutes, local governments, engineering companies, and government-funded institutions.

Department of Architecture : Architecture Major (5-year system), Architectural Engineering Major

Graduates in the Department of Architecture are distinguishing themselves not only in various architectural planning offices and large construction/development companies but in a variety of other fields including education and research, development and real estate, professional consulting and engineering, and computer graphics and visual design.

Architecture Major (5-year system)
The architecture program offers intensive courses on 5-year architectural planning and designing based on the certification criteria for international architectural education in accordance with international trends. The program develops students’ architectural capacity in theories related to architectural planning, architectural design, urban residential and complex planning, urban planning and development, and facility management, along with applied knowledge. In addition, it provides students with customized practical education for direct application to practice.
Architectural Engineering Major
The architectural engineering program offers a world-class education such as architectural construction, and the construction management program based on a 4-year architectural structure. It aims to cultivate architectural engineers and skilled managers with a systematic comprehensive mindset and working-level competence in solving problems.
